Our Mission: Living Labs for Youth
Aquatic Adventures educates urban youth about science, the ocean and nature through tuition-free programs, creating the next generation of scientific and environmental leaders.

Our Vision:

  • A scientific community that reflects the diversity of our society.
  • Urban children and youth are empowered to reach their goals.
  • People from diverse communities have an understanding of the sciences, personal connection to the natural world and a commitment to steward the environment.

Founded in 1999, Aquatic Adventures operates programs that utilize three strategies: classroom-based experiential science programs, intensive after-school and summer programs, community-based habitat restoration.

Major Accomplishments in the Past Year

  • In 2007, Aquatic Adventures served over 3,500 students and provided more than 50,000 hours of education.
  • 81% of Aquatic Adventures intensive program graduates are attending college and greater than 58% are attending four-year universities, as compared to less than 17% of their peers from the same school.  These universities include UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Davis, San Diego State University and Point Loma Nazarene University. A 2008 graduate will attend Brown University in the fall, making her the first student to graduate from the high school and attend an Ivy League school in over 15 years.
  • Program participants in our classroom and field-based formal education programs increased their science content knowledge by 35% or greater.
  • In January, 2008 Aquatic Adventures was selected as the National Environmental Excellence Award winner by SeaWorld/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm.
  • In February, 2008, Aquatic Adventures co-produced an Electronic Field Trip on gray whales reaching over 68,000 youth nationwide.
  • In May, 2008, Aquatic Adventures facilitated a habitat education and restoration event in a local canyon that was attended by 952 volunteers, making it the largest community-based restoration event in the country.
